CAS 101-102 Foundation Course

CAS 101 is designed especially for students in the Rainbow Advantage Program. The main focus is on the development of research and communication skills, with special attention to becoming information literate, learning new technologies, and becoming familiar with a variety of perspectives. Additionally, students will make connections across their curriculum and understand the link between theory and practice. The class is a hands-on collaborative environment with creative activities and discussion. CAS is worth 3 credits of your Writing Intensive requirement (W).

English 100/101

In this class, the focus is upon the process of writing, using literature as a means to generate paper topics. Through this approach, students will also be sharpening their critical thinking skills as they write. Written responses to the various readings will take the form of several patterns of discourse, including: narration, description, persuasion, comparison/contrast, and opinion. English 101 requires a supplemental tutorial laboratory. ENG 100/101 is worth 3 credits of your Written Communication requirement (FW).

IS 291 Service Learning Practicum

This class challenges students to combine community service with an integrated academic goal -- connecting theory and practice. Through experience and reflection, students will apply their knowledge, think critically, develop volunteer skills, and enhance social awareness and sensitivity to the larger issues, which are present in every community. IS 291 is worth 3 credits of your General Electives requirement.

American Studies 202

This course examines diversity and changes in American values and culture through literature, film, visual arts, and architecture. AmSt 202 is worth 3 credits of your Humanities requirement (DH).

American Studies 211

This course involves interdisciplinary exploration of such current American domestic issues topics as politics, economics, civil rights, family life, the justice system, and the environment (DS).
